BORKUM/FÖHR/AMRUM - Plant troughs with bench

A great combination of planter trough and bench for public spaces are the models BORKUM, FÖHR and AMRUM. All plant troughs with bench are quickly set up and filled, but can be pushed aside if necessary thanks to the crane hooks and  forklift openings (optional). The bottom of the planting trough is water-permeable, root insulation plates protect the planting from heat and frost.

Planters with benches – a successful combination for public spaces

The combination of a planter and a bench offers unique possibilities for the design of outdoor spaces. With our planter-bench combination, urban planners can create seating and green spaces even in small public areas – all as part of a harmonious overall design. Depending on the planting and the season, the planting area can even provide shade for the seating. 

The planters with benches are designed in terms of shape, size and features to meet the diverse requirements of public spaces. When it comes to the bench, the focus is not only on seating comfort and layout but also on the robustness of the materials. The base frame is manufactured from classically elegant Corten steel, low-maintenance stainless steel or colour-coated stainless steel in RAL or DB colour shades, according to your preferences. For the seat surface, you can choose between RESYSTA®, hardwood or KEBONY®. As all items are made to order, we can supply custom-fit planter-bench combinations for your town hall or station forecourt, for the pedestrian zone or for other urban spaces. 

To allow for particularly flexible placement, the planters have crane lugs at each of the four corners, to which plants can also be attached. Forklift slots, as with the mobile tree planters, ensure easy transport, for example at town festivals or markets.

High-quality materials for seat panels

Seat panels play a significant role not only in terms of seating comfort but also as a design element. It is not just the choice of material – such as RESYSTA®, hardwood or KEBONY® – that matters, but also the dimensions of the seat panels and the arrangement of the slats. We have opted for various standard dimensions for the slats. However, we are also happy to accommodate your special requests.

Planters with benches – product ranges

Every urban area is different, and so too are the requirements for planter-bench combinations. Below, we present our product ranges, which differ in shape and in the number and arrangement of the seats. We are also happy to manufacture custom shapes and dimensions. Please contact us or send us your rough sketch. 

All benches share the classic seat height of 475 mm and the comfortable seat depth of 490 mm. At 500 mm, the planters are slightly higher than the bench as standard. The planters are bevelled all round to prevent injury. The seat cushion is secured with screws from below, so that no screws are visible on the seat surface. This prevents vandalism and the risk of injury.

As standard, the metal planters are fitted with a water-permeable base. This ensures that excess water drains away in a controlled manner and that waterlogging cannot occur, even during heavy rainfall. Root protection plates made of extruded polystyrene (XPS) protect the root zone of the plants from heat and frost.

Frequently asked questions about planters with benches

Die Pflanztröge mit Sitzbank von Gartenmetall sind als Stadtmöbel für begrünte Aufenthaltsbereiche konzipiert. Sie verbinden einen Pflanzbereich mit einer fest integrierten Sitzfläche und eignen sich beispielsweise für Fußgängerzonen, Rathaus- und Bahnhofsvorplätze sowie andere öffentliche Plätze. Je nach Anordnung können die Elemente gleichzeitig Aufenthaltsbereiche definieren, Flächen gliedern und Wege oder Übergänge strukturieren.
Gartenmetall offers seven basic configurations. BORKUM features a single-sided bench, whilst FÖHR has a double-sided corner seating arrangement. In the SYLT model, two seating areas face each other, whilst JUIST features a recessed single-sided bench. USEDOM has seating on three sides and HELGOLAND on four. AMRUM is the round version and is available with one or two seating recesses. In addition, bespoke designs tailored to specific projects are possible.
For this product range, a seat height of 475 mm and a seat depth of 490 mm are specified as standard. The standard height of the planting area is 500 mm. The technical specifications also provide for raised planting areas; Gartenmetall offers heights of 650 and 900 mm, amongst others. The length and width depend on the selected series and model.

In the standard versions, the main body can be made from Corten steel, stainless steel or colour-coated stainless steel. RAL or DB colour shades are available for the colour coating. Depending on the series and configuration, the seat surfaces are made from hardwood, KEBONY®, RESYSTA® or thermally treated ash. The material, cross-section and orientation of the seat slats are specified to suit the respective version.
Yes. The planters with benches are made to order, so their dimensions and design can be tailored to the specific project. In addition to the standard designs on offer, custom shapes and dimensions are also possible. For project-specific designs, production can take place on the basis of an approval specification.
As standard, the planter troughs with benches have a water-permeable base through which excess water can drain away. In addition, root insulation boards made of 20 mm thick XPS are provided in the planting area. These reduce the impact of temperature on the root zone. Alternative base designs are available as an option for applications requiring water retention.
For the planters, options include water-retention mats, as well as designs featuring a water reservoir or a watertight base. If a watertight base is used, an overflow must be provided to allow excess water to drain away and prevent waterlogging. The most suitable features should therefore be determined in conjunction with the planned planting scheme and maintenance plan.
The planters are fitted with lifting lugs for crane transport. Forklift openings can also be provided as an option; privacy screens are available for this purpose. This allows suitably equipped units to be moved, for example, in front of markets or at events. In normal use, the planter-bench combinations are predominantly installed on a permanent basis.
Backrests and side panels are available as optional extras. A backrest, for example, can be freestanding or, in the case of a raised planting area, attached directly to the planter. Side panels can be fitted in various positions, depending on the type of bench and technical feasibility. In addition, warm white LED lighting can be integrated beneath the bench.
Shrubs and trees can also form part of the planting scheme, provided they are appropriately sized. The existing tabs in the planter can be used not only for transport but also to secure shrubs and trees. However, whether a specific tree species and size is suitable for a particular planter design must be assessed on the basis of available root space, container dimensions, water supply and the planting concept. For projects where the tree is the technical focal point, Gartenmetall also offers its own product range of tree planters.
