Technical Construction of the Decorative Panels

Front and Back

The privacy screen can be used on one side or as a combination of front and back panels. The folded edges on the front and back panels ensure sufficient stability of the elements. Holes are provided on the sides for mounting; alternatively, keyholes are available for wall mounting.

Mounting the panels according to the specific conditions

Even in the garden, the privacy screen can be subjected to significant wind and other forces. When installing in the ground, depending on the soil conditions, an installation depth of over 800 mm may be necessary to anchor the panels securely. There are various options for securely fastening the metal walls, e.g., with a screw-on base for embedding in concrete, with a screw-on base for bolting to a level and stable surface, for wall mounting, or for securing between two posts.

Mounting Between Other Elements

To securely mount privacy screens between columns, wooden palisades, gabion baskets, and fence posts, we offer matching mounting kits with threaded rods, nuts, anchors, and other accessories—ensuring that your metal privacy screen stands securely in your garden.

Back of the privacy screen

On the back of the privacy screens, you can see the folded edges on all sides, which serve to stabilize them. As a rule, a special back panel (the “double-sided” version) is only necessary for particularly exposed installations, such as partitions between semi-detached houses. In practice, therefore, more than 95% of privacy screens are designed and installed without an additional back panel.

Lighting and Backlighting of the Privacy Screen with a Design

To create atmospheric effects, LED light rails can be attached to the inside of the back panel using magnetic clips. Particularly beautiful effects are achieved when the motif wall is fitted with a translucent and reflective acrylic glass panel. These are available in various colors, such as white, red, blue, or green. These acrylic glass panels are securely mounted from the inside using welded bolts. To prevent light from shining through to the back, we recommend installing an additional back panel.

Stainless Steel Embedded Designs

A very special visual effect can be achieved when stainless steel designs or company logos are cut out and mounted with a small gap on the privacy screen made of patinated stainless steel or color-coated stainless steel. They are mounted using welded bolts that are not visible from the front but ensure a reliable mechanical connection.

Custom Designs

Metal garden ornaments often become truly interesting when customers provide their own designs that complement their garden, their company, or the owner themselves. These custom designs are cut using a laser cutting process, resulting in precise, perfectly fitting, and highly intricate designs. Laser cutting is possible for sheet metal up to a thickness of over 10 mm. Gartenmetall relies on high-quality CNC laser cutting using state-of-the-art machines, as this minimizes warping of the sheet metal, ensures high precision, and allows even the smallest contours to be cut out with exact precision.

Contour and Perforated Grid Designs

Once you’ve found a design that suits you, the Gartenmetall team will ensure the best possible execution. In addition to the more classic contour design, there’s also the option of a perforated grid design. Many designs can be rendered even more spectacularly this way. For perforated designs, achieving a good result depends on the clever distribution of holes, hole spacing, and hole diameter. This requires specialized software and experience. However, a perforated design isn’t always the best choice, as explained below.

Tips and Guidelines for Designing Effective, Laser-Cut Designs

  • A design can only be created using two properties: cutout/hole (= no material) or sheet metal areas remain intact.*) Achieving a good result depends on the smart placement of holes, hole spacing, and hole diameter.
  • For more complex or longer designs, bridges are necessary so that sheet metal remains within the cutouts, creating a contrast to the cutout.
  • The cutting gap of the laser beam is significantly less than 1 mm for sheet metal up to 3 mm thick. This cut line is practically invisible from a distance of more than 1 m. The narrowest cut-out contour width should therefore be at least as wide as the sheet metal is thick. For a good visual effect, at least twice the sheet metal thickness is recommended.
  • A line drawing file (= DXF file) is required for laser cutting. Flat-surface templates (e.g., PDF files) must be converted into a line drawing file.

The privacy screen is particularly stable when installed using the appropriate metal bases. These are bolted to a level concrete foundation, and the metal elements are securely fastened to them to withstand wind. Depending on local conditions, however, the metal privacy screen can also be mounted between existing columns, palisades, wooden or metal posts, or directly on the house wall. There are virtually no limits to the design possibilities.

4. Care for the VISTA Privacy Screen

Like all Gartenmetall products, the privacy screen with a design is made of high-quality Corten steel, stainless steel, or color-coated stainless steel. The metal panels are folded over on all sides, ensuring sufficient stability. This makes the VISTA privacy screen ideally suited for outdoor use and able to withstand rain, snow, sun, and wind. Regularly remove debris such as bird droppings and plant matter, and check stainless steel surfaces for any signs of rust. When choosing a privacy screen, the design isn’t the only factor to consider. The material, dimensions, installation situation, and mounting must all work together, especially if the screen is freestanding or is to be mounted between existing walls, posts, or gabions. VISTA decorative screens are made of Corten steel, stainless steel, or color-coated stainless steel and can be customized with standard designs, custom designs, a back panel, and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About VISTA Feature Walls

VISTA feature walls are available in Corten steel, stainless steel, and color-coated stainless steel. Corten steel develops its characteristic patina of noble rust through weathering. Stainless steel is suitable for a subtle metallic finish. Color-coated stainless steel allows for coordination with architecture, facades, fences, or other outdoor elements.

Which version is appropriate therefore depends not only on the desired appearance, but also on the installation location and the surrounding materials.

VISTA offers a wide selection of laser-cut designs, including grasses, alliums, reeds, wildflowers, dandelions, Flores, and geometric patterns. Designs without a pattern are also available.

When making your selection, consider how solid you want the surface to appear. A delicate motif creates a different level of visual permeability than a largely solid metal surface and can therefore be used specifically to design patios, seating areas, and garden spaces.

Yes. Gartenmetall also produces custom designs, lettering, and company logos. For production, the contours are digitally prepared for laser cutting. Ideally, a suitable DXF file is available for this purpose; other templates can be prepared accordingly, depending on the source material.

In addition, stainless steel designs or lettering can be mounted on a feature wall. This option is suitable, for example, for company locations, entrance areas, or prestigious outdoor spaces.

In addition to standard sizes, custom dimensions are available. For a single raw panel, the maximum usable size is approximately 1,300 × 2,880 mm. Larger privacy screens can be assembled from multiple elements.

For longer installations, the layout should be incorporated into the planning early on. This allows joints, pattern continuity, and mounting points to be arranged in a way that makes sense from a design perspective.

VISTA is typically installed on one side only. The folded edges and mounting points are located on the back side.

If the wall is clearly visible from both sides, a double-sided design may be appropriate. This applies, for example, to partitions between two patios or privacy screens that stand freestanding in the garden and are visible from multiple sides.

The mounting method depends on the existing surface. Options include screw-on bases for embedding in concrete, screw-on bases for concrete surfaces, mounting on walls, and installation between stone columns, wooden beams, gabions, or fence posts.

A freestanding privacy screen provides a significant surface area for wind to act upon. Therefore, the foundation, fastenings, and installation depth must be tailored to the size of the panels, the location, and the soil conditions.

Gartenmetall’s product catalog cites a VISTA screen with a surface area of 2 m² anchored in the ground as an example, indicating a overturning moment of approximately 1,000 Nm at a wind speed of 100 km/h. Depending on soil mechanics, an installation depth of more than 800 mm may therefore be required. Especially in exposed locations, the fastening method should not be determined only during installation.

Yes. LED light rails can be integrated into the display panels. When combined with a translucent acrylic backing, the cut-out contours become clearly visible in the dark.

An additional back panel may be useful if the light is intended to shine specifically toward the front and not escape from the back. Lighting and the backing should therefore be planned in conjunction with the installation situation.

With Corten steel, the desired patina develops through weathering. During this process, rust particles may be washed away by rainwater.

When installing the material directly against light-colored walls, natural stone surfaces, or delicate finishes, this effect should be taken into account during the planning phase. Material selection, spacing, and drainage can be crucial in preventing unwanted discoloration of adjacent surfaces.

The amount of maintenance required depends on the surface material chosen. Plant debris, bird droppings, and other deposits should be removed regularly.

For stainless steel, external rust and adhering iron particles should be removed promptly. Corten steel requires alternating wet and dry weather conditions for its patina to develop. Areas under coverings may therefore develop a different appearance than surfaces fully exposed to the elements.
