Sheet metal blanks for metalworkers, fabricators, and DIYers

Since we Corten steel in very large quantities, we are often able to offer these cut-to-size pieces at very competitive prices. That’s why even smaller steel dealers and many metalworkers purchase their Corten steel from us. We offer custom cut-to-size pieces as well as complete Corten steel sheets for further processing.

Caution When Welding Corten Steel

When welding the cut pieces, make sure to use the correct welding filler material. “Regular” welding wire rusts through particularly quickly when used with weather-resistant structural steel (Corten steel), since regular welding wire has lower corrosion resistance than Corten steel. Therefore, be sure to use the special Corten steel welding wire. Upon request  we also offer special Corten steel welding electrodes in small quantities for on-site welding to the plates. If you order Corten steel from a local metalworker: Have them confirm in writing that they will use welding wire suitable for Corten steel.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind when using Corten steel in waterlogged conditions.

Corten steel can only build up the protective layer that prevents it from rusting through if the surface dries regularly. Experts often cite a maximum period of one week for this. In cases where Corten steel is exposed to standing water—meaning it can barely dry out, or is even submerged—it will rust through just as quickly as regular steel. Depending on the temperature and available atmospheric oxygen, the rust-through rate can exceed 1 mm of material thickness per year. In all cases where standing water and Corten steel come into contact, additional measures are necessary to protect the Corten steel. We carry sheets in 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm thicknesses, all in large-format panels measuring 3.000 x 1.500 mm. Upon request, we can also supply Corten steel sheets with thicknesses of 15 mm and 20 mm.
All sheets are delivered ex-factory in a mill-finished state, meaning they have a steel-gray appearance. We can pre-weather the sheets for you, or you can apply the proven 24-hour rusting process yourself using our special SUPER RUST pads.

Prices for rectangular cut-to-size sheets can be found here.
Please inquire separately for larger quantities of 2 or more complete sheets.

Here, we are happy to serve as a traditional contract manufacturer for metalworkers, metal fabricators, and even private builders. For laser cutting, we require a DXF file, which we can also create as a service—for example, from a PDF file. If only a hand-drawn sketch is available, we can also provide a quote based on that.
Send us your inquiry: info@gartenmetall.de. You will then receive a quote from our sales department.

Corten steel sheet—the perfect combination of function and charm.

Corten steel sheet from Gartenmetall is a high-quality material characterized by its exceptional weather resistance. Over time, it forms a protective layer of rust that shields it from further corrosion and gives it its distinctive, rustic look. Despite its robust nature, it is easy to work with and shape, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Whether used for privacy screens, garden features, water features, or garden furniture, it brings natural elegance and durability to any space.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corten Steel Sheet Cuts

Anyone who wants to fabricate a component or their own metal object from Corten steel should, above all, determine the dimensions, sheet thickness, and contour before cutting. Gartenmetall supplies Corten steel as complete raw sheets or as custom sheet cuts. For custom contours, existing drawing data can be used, or a PDF file or hand-drawn sketch can be prepared for manufacturing.

Gartenmetall carries raw Corten steel sheets in the size 3.000 × 1.500 mm. Sheet thicknesses of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 mm are available from stock. Corten steel with a thickness of 15 or 20 mm can be supplied upon request. In addition to full sheets, custom sheet cuts are available.
Yes. In addition to rectangular Corten steel blanks, we can also manufacture custom plates based on drawings. A DXF file is the appropriate data format for laser cutting. If only a PDF file is available, we can convert it into a DXF file. Even a hand-drawn sketch with sufficient detail can serve as the basis for a request.
Gartenmetall uses weather-resistant structural steel of grade S355J2W+N with the material number 1.8965. This material is suitable for further processing and can also be welded using the appropriate filler material. This means that the exact material grade is known from the outset during the planning and further processing of the Corten steel sheet blanks.
Corten steel sheets are supplied mill-finished as standard and are initially steel gray. Under suitable weathering conditions, the typical patina of noble rust begins to form after about two to three weeks. It can take 1.5 to 3 years for the surface to fully develop. This requires a regular alternation between wet and dry conditions. To achieve a rusted appearance as early as the installation phase, the Corten steel can be optically pre-rusted or treated with the SUPER-ROST-PAD.
Corten steel can be welded, but a welding filler material suitable for weather-resistant structural steel should be used. Standard welding wire has lower corrosion resistance and can therefore become a weak point in the joint. Gartenmetall also offers special welding electrodes for Corten steel in small quantities upon request.
The protective oxide layer on Corten steel requires alternating wet and dry phases. If a surface remains permanently wet or is submerged in water for an extended period, this protective layer cannot form reliably. For structures where waterlogging is expected, appropriate structural or additional corrosion protection measures should therefore be planned for during the design phase.
