COLUMNA information pillars and display boards as a wayfinding system and signage

Display boards and information pillars usually have to be manufactured individually and to order, as requirements vary depending on their intended use. The options range from simple boards to complex display cases with pull-out information panels.& nbsp;

We’ll show you a few typical designs for wayfinding signs and display boards – for heritage site signage, as signposts for footpaths and as display cases in front of town halls. Let these inspire you and enquire about your own bespoke project.

All information boards and display cases are available in classic rust-red Corten steel, in polished stainless steel with Rotex finish and in  colour-coated finish in colours from the RAL or DB colour charts. Further information on the finishes can be found under Material.

GOTHA information board: clean-lined and simple

GOTHA is a simple and clean-lined information board. It can either be bolted in place (version with base plate) or set in concrete (version with extended base). We offer four different standard sizes, but custom dimensions are always possible. The information posts are designed to accommodate the lettering panels. This means that the display panels, manufactured on site, can be quickly attached using four spacers (20 mm x ø25 mm).

Information plaque describes the history of the Cistercian nunnery St. Marienthron in Nimbschen. Situated on grassy ground, surrounded by autumn leaves in the forest. Text: 'After the Reformation - The Fate of a Monastery'.

DESSAU information pillar with integrated lettering

The DESSAU information pillar is a multi-part structure. Panels featuring laser-cut lettering or motifs are screwed onto a sturdy frame – which is welded to the base plate – from both the front and the rear. The laser-cut recesses are backed with white acrylic glass from the rear and can be illuminated as an option. In this case, the cable is routed through the recess in the base. The sheet metal panel can be removed again for maintenance of the lighting.

PIRNA pull-out display case

To meet specific requirements, for example in front of town halls, clubhouses, restaurants or hotels, we have developed the PIRNA display case in two widths: 700 mm and 1,400 mm. With its pull-out, magnetic and lockable display panel, PIRNA can accommodate frequently changing information that needs to be kept protected from the weather. The display panel is traffic white (RAL 9016).

The viewing pane is made of sturdy safety glass and can be illuminated from the inside using LED strips. A maintenance access panel for the electrical components is provided at the base. Designed for bolt-on mounting onto a prepared foundation; can also be set in concrete on request.

JENA is our information pillar for public spaces. It features text and information panels on all four sides, protected by safety glass panels. Material: toughened safety glass, 4 mm. Lighting units and displays can be installed inside. For stable installation, a base plate is set in concrete in the ground and the mounting plate of the plinth is bolted to it. This protects the column from vandalism.

Frequently asked questions about COLUMNA – information pillars

For permanently installed information boards, GOTHA and ERFURT are the main options. GOTHA has a flat panel surface; with ERFURT, the upper section is angled backwards, making the information panel mounted there easier to read. DESSAU is suitable when text or motifs are to be integrated directly into the stele. PIRNA is designed for regularly changing information, whilst JENA can accommodate information on four sides.

The current Gartenmetall product page features information boards and display cases made from Corten steel, stainless steel with a Rotex finish, and colour-coated versions in accordance with the RAL or DB colour charts. The technical product information also lists hot-dip galvanised steel within the product family. The specific finish intended for a particular model should therefore be selected on a model-by-model basis.
The dimensions vary significantly depending on the model. GOTHA is available as standard in heights of 900 or 1,800 mm, amongst others, and in widths ranging from 300 to 900 mm. ERFURT is designed for information boards ranging from DIN A5 to DIN A2 in landscape format and has a height of 900 mm up to the viewing area. DESSAU is available, for example, in dimensions of 1,800 × 1,000 × 100 mm or 1,800 × 800 × 400 mm. For GOTHA and ERFURT, special dimensions and shapes are available; for DESSAU, special dimensions are available on request.
The method of fixing depends on the model. GOTHA and ERFURT can either be set in concrete using an extended base or bolted down using a welded base plate. For DESSAU, the internal base structure is bolted onto a prepared foundation. PIRNA is bolted onto a prepared foundation as standard; a version for embedding in concrete is available as an option. With JENA, a base plate is first embedded in concrete, to which the mounting plate of the plinth is then secured.
No. For GOTHA and ERFURT, the display board is to be provided by the client. The metal structure is designed to accommodate its attachment. Gartenmetall provides four stainless steel spacers with M6 threads and matching screws for this purpose. These allow the separately produced information or signage panel to be attached to the stele.
With DESSAU, letters can be cut out of the sheet metal panels on both sides and backed with 3 mm-thick white acrylic glass. Internal lighting is available as an option; the sheet metal panels remain removable for maintenance work. For PIRNA, internal LED lighting and additional lettering beneath the display panel are also available as options. These features are not standard on all information pillars in the product range.
The PIRNA display case is designed for changing notices. Its display panel is pull-out, magnetic and lockable, and is protected behind a 4 mm thick pane of ESG safety glass. PIRNA is described as being suitable for, amongst other things, public information, directions, menu details and club news. Depending on the model, the display panel can be used on one or both sides.
Corten steel develops its characteristic rust patina when exposed to alternating wet and dry weather conditions. This can result in rust-coloured deposits forming in the surrounding area, particularly in the initial phase. For Corten steel designs from ERFURT and DESSAU, Gartenmetall expressly advises that the location be planned in such a way that rust particles and runoff water can be channelled away effectively. This must be taken into account during the detailed planning stage, particularly where sensitive floor coverings are concerned.
According to Gartenmetall, lighting units and displays can be installed inside the JENA information pillar. JENA features four text and information panels, which are protected by 4 mm-thick toughened safety glass panels. However, specific details regarding display technology, power supply or media control are not listed as standard features on the product page; such specifications must therefore be planned on a project-by-project basis.
