Benches – Technology and Options

Thanks to our many years of experience, we have virtually perfected the technical details of our benches. Seat cushions are bolted on from below, backrests are manufactured to match the bench’s design, and the integrated lighting shows everything in the best light.

Floor Fixing

Every bench should stand firmly and securely on the ground. There are several possible options for this: using brackets to bolt it down, or designing the bench to be so heavy that it is virtually impossible to move without tools. If the base is constructed as a solid metal structure, filling it with sand or moraine gravel is a good way of increasing its weight and thus its stability. If the bench is to be embedded in the ground, pay attention to the seat height and, if necessary, request a higher seat when ordering!

Seat panels: Technical details

The seat panels are bolted from below using a stainless steel cross-bracing system, ensuring that no fixing bolts are visible from above or from the sides of the timber. The entire seating surface is bolted to the substructure between the seat panels. This ensures that the structure remains accessible at all times for maintenance purposes. The screws can also be fitted into the timber from below using the high-quality Gartenmetall LOCK-System®. This particularly robust method has been statically verified with its own approval (ETA 11/0212 dated 12 October 2016).

The bench sits on a point foundation: the left side is fixed by its weight, the right is screwed with a 100 mm elevation. Labels read: 'Seat cover', 'Ground tab with dowel', 'Fixed by weight', 'Fixed by screw'.

Materials for seat cushions

The dimensions and arrangement of the seat slats have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the bench. As a general rule, we recommend a uniform and symmetrical arrangement. There are different preferred dimensions depending on the material. However, we are generally open to all other dimensions – subject to availability. The following materials are available:

Thermally treated ash 25x120 mm
RESYSTA 140x120 mm
KEBONY 22x120 mm
Hardwood 65x65 mm
Hardwood 130 x 65 mm
Steel, 65 x 220 mm, with a black plastic coating

Backrests for benches (optional)

Backrests transform the stool-style bench into a proper bench and provide the basis for relaxed seating. Height: approx. 350 mm, recline angle approx. 20°. The length of the backrests can be set freely, regardless of the length of the seat cushion. A touch of asymmetry often gives the seating element that special ‘something’. The maximum distance between two brackets depends on the material and cross-section. In most cases, it is < 1 metre. The brackets are included in the price per metre.

Integrated lighting (optional)

The benches can be attractively illuminated. There are two options: for benches with a solid base, the LED light strip can be fitted along the long side of the solid body, 250 mm from each corner. For benches with an open body, the light strip is also fitted beneath the seat cushion.

Dimensions for benches

Our benches come in various standard dimensions that have proven their worth in practice. Most benches have a comfortable seat height of 475 mm and a seat depth of 490 mm. You can find more detailed information in our product information, where you will also find a checklist to help with planning. However, as we manufacture all our benches in-house, custom dimensions are no problem. Please ask our customer advisers: Contact

Bench length
The bench length is determined by the length of the front edge. It may differ from the length of the seat cushions due to the design.

Seat height
There is no official standard for the height of benches. In public areas, we recommend a seat height of 420 mm to 490 mm. As standard, our benches are designed with a seat height of 475 mm. This also makes it easier for older people to stand up. If the bench is to be fixed to the floor, the legs must be extended accordingly.

Seat depth
The seat depth should be at least 400 mm for benches with a backrest. For stools, the depth can be increased to over 500 mm. In practice, 490 mm has proven to be a typical seat depth.

Round benches
For round benches, the inner and outer diameters are specified as dimensions; in some cases, the length of the front edge and the opening angle are also given. In addition, it is necessary to specify whether the front edge lies on the outside or inside of the radius.

The rectangular bench displays seat height, length, and depth. The round bench features inner and outer diameters. Both are crafted from light wood, set in a neutral environment. Text labels various dimensions.

Tip: Benches as enclosed circular benches

Many of the semi-circular street furniture items can also be ordered as enclosed circular benches. This creates an open space in the centre which can, for example, be planted. It is also possible to incorporate a round planter, which can be creatively planted with perennials, grasses or seasonal flowers.

Example: Round benches transform a concrete wasteland into a green canteen garden

The facility manager at the Altes Röhrenwerk in Ulm-Söflingen dreamt of a beer garden – and the result is a canteen garden that brings greenery and urban nature right back into the heart of the industrial estate. Round tree benches made of Corten steel with 360° seat pads of curved RESYSTA invite visitors to linger beneath the various canopies, with a variety of spring blooms and autumn colours. Heat-tolerant perennials within the tree benches and in the flowerbeds provide sources of nectar, thereby heralding the return of insects. With a keen eye, staff at the site can thus observe nature right at their workplace – a true haven for taking a breather during the working day and a fine example of greening concrete jungles. Frequently asked questions about our round benches

The round metal garden benches differ primarily in terms of their substructure and the arrangement of the seat cushion. FÜSSEN features a minimalist side panel, whilst ESSEN has sturdier side panels and recesses for the seat cushion. BONN has a solid, enclosed substructure with seat slats arranged radially or lengthways, whereas in HALLE the seat cushions run across the radius. KOBLENZ combines a solid, conical substructure with an integrated backrest. RÜGEN is designed as a round seating and lounging island. GERA offers a particularly deep, ergonomically shaped seat surface with curved RESYSTA® slats. Which series is suitable therefore depends not only on the desired diameter, but also on the seating direction, backrest, base and seat cushion.
When designing a circular bench, the inner and outer diameters – or the desired radius – and the opening or segment angle are particularly important. In addition, the seat height and seat depth must be specified. If the length of the front edge is used as a reference, it must be clearly stated whether this lies on the inner or outer radius. These details are particularly important if the bench is to encircle a tree, a planting area or another circular feature.
Many semi-circular metal garden benches can also be designed as fully circular benches. Furthermore, custom dimensions are possible. The radius, diameter and opening angle must be compatible with the relevant product range and the chosen seat cushion, as not every seat cushion material can be combined with every bench design. Technical feasibility should therefore be determined on the basis of the specific dimensions.
The Gartenmetall round benches are predominantly available with a seat height of 475 mm in the standard versions shown; the seat depth varies depending on the design. Among the current Ø3,000 mm models, the FÜSSEN and ESSEN each have a seat depth of 456 mm, BONN 490 mm, HALLE 460 mm and KOBLENZ 400 mm. The more sculpted GERA series has a seat depth of 640 mm in the version shown. RÜGEN is designed as a seating and lounging island and is therefore not directly comparable to a traditional stool or backrest bench.
Gartenmetall specifies Corten steel, stainless steel, hot-dip galvanised steel and colour-coated stainless steel for the frames of the circular benches. Depending on the bench type, the seat surfaces are available in thermally treated ash, hardwood, RESYSTA®, KEBONY® and black plastic-coated metal. Not every combination is technically feasible for every series; the seat surface, cross-section and radius must therefore be planned together.
Yes. The KOBLENZ range is designed as a round bench with an integrated, continuous backrest. In the current version, the backrest is approximately 350 mm high, with a recline angle of approximately 20°. The product family page also shows the RÜGEN model with a backrest; backrests are generally available as an optional extra in the seating system. Which version can be combined with a particular circular bench depends on the series and design.
Depending on the design, a Gartenmetall round bench may stand on its own weight or be fitted with ground brackets for bolting to the ground. In the case of solid metal structures, filling them with sand or moraine gravel can add extra weight to improve stability. For public spaces, Gartenmetall generally recommends bolting the bench in place to prevent it from being moved unintentionally and to deter vandalism. If the bench is embedded in the paving, the additional embedment depth must be taken into account when determining the seat height. The necessary foundation must be provided on site for the relevant product models.
At Gartenmetall, the seat cushions are screwed into place from below via a stainless steel cross-bracing. This means that no fixing screws are visible from above or from the sides, either in the wood or in the seat cushion. The pre-assembled seat is then attached to the substructure and remains accessible for maintenance work. The Gartenmetall LOCK System® can also be used for screwing into the timber; Gartenmetall cites technical approval ETA 11/0212 dated 12 October 2016 for this purpose.
With Corten steel with a natural rust finish, material may flake off the rusted surface, particularly in the first few years. Gartenmetall states that, for the round bench models, rust flaking of up to approximately 0.05 mm may occur. The location should therefore be planned in such a way that water containing rust can drain away in a controlled manner and adjacent surfaces are not discoloured uncontrollably. This information applies to Corten steel models and cannot be generalised to the other available metal finishes.
Yes. Gartenmetall specifically markets its round benches as seating around trees and also offers fully enclosed round designs for many of its semi-circular ranges. When planning, it is particularly important to specify the required internal diameter and the opening angle of the bench. Gartenmetall does not specify a universal minimum distance between the bench and the tree for this product range; the clear opening must therefore be dimensioned to suit the specific tree and the particular design.
