Technical Design of a Mailbox

The freestanding mailbox can be customized in terms of features and size to meet the individual needs of the homeowner. As standard, the mailbox is equipped with a mail slot and a lockable retrieval door, available either at the back or the front. 
The entire mail collection area is completely lined with stainless steel on the inside to protect the mail. Space for a nameplate is provided in the flap. The CASA elements are designed to be set in concrete, with a embedding depth of approximately 40 cm.

We have established the following standard dimensions for the posts:

  • Height: 1,000 mm, 1,600 mm, and 2,000 mm
  • Width: 470 mm
  • Depth: 180 mm and 400 mm

The mailbox can be securely anchored in the ground or on a stable surface in various ways. It is also  possible to screw the mailbox to the wall of the house.

Every mailbox and communication column is custom-designed and manufactured. As a result, many extensions and combinations are possible:

  • House numbers, street names, and family names laser-cut into the surface and backed with stainless steel or acrylic glass. Alternatively: stainless steel lettering mounted on the surface
  • LED lighting for the house number from the inside
  • Cutouts for installing electrical components such as speakers, lighting buttons, fingerprint scanners, motion sensors, or video surveillance units (components to be provided by the customer)

Frequently Asked Questions About the CASA Mailbox Post

The CASA mailbox column is a freestanding column-style mailbox for the home entrance, with features customized for each project. Its basic functions include a mail slot and a lockable mail retrieval compartment. Additional features include a doorbell button, signage, a newspaper compartment, additional mail slots, and a package compartment. The column can also be pre-wired for on-site components such as a speaker, microphone, fingerprint scanner, or video unit.
CASA is available in Corten steel with a patina finish, stainless steel with a Rotex finish, and color-coated stainless steel. Gartenmetall uses weather-resistant S355J2W+N structural steel (material number 1.8965) for its Corten steel products. For color-coated CASA versions, stainless steel serves as the base material; RAL or DB color shades can be specified on a project-by-project basis.
The freestanding CASA mailbox posts come standard with a width of 470 mm, 1,000, 1,600, or 2,000 mm in height, and optionally 180 or 400 mm in depth. Custom dimensions are available; the current technical product information lists, among other things, custom heights, custom depths, and a double width of 940 mm. Since every CASA column is designed to order, Gartenmetall creates a 3D CAD approval drawing prior to production.

The current CASA base model is designed with an internal base plate with holes for bolting it to a foundation. Alternatively, Gartenmetall offers an external base plate or a version extended by 400 mm for embedding in concrete. The mounting method should therefore be determined during the foundation and piping planning phase.

Yes. In addition to the freestanding mailbox posts, CASA is also available as a wall-mounted mailbox. The documented standard model measures 800 × 470 × 180 mm (H × W × D) and features a mail slot and a front access door. It is mounted using a mounting plate, so that no mounting screws are visible from the front; the distance from the wall is approximately 20 mm. Custom dimensions are available upon request.

Yes. For CASA, appropriate cutouts and internal mounting points for electrical components can be provided. Gartenmetall lists, among other things, speakers and microphones, as well as more complex elements such as fingerprint scanners or video units. The electrical components themselves are not included with these preparation options; they must be installed on-site. To ensure a precise fit, drawings or the intended components should be coordinated well in advance.

For a freestanding stele, the empty conduit in the foundation must also be planned for early on. Gartenmetall also points out that the electrical components used must be suitable for outdoor use and, if necessary, for exposure to splashing water.

Both options are available. In the current technical product information, the basic version is designed with a lockable access door on the rear; front access can be planned as an alternative. The desired side should be specified before production, as it also affects the positioning of the column and certain additional compartments.

Yes. CASA can be expanded to include a stainless steel newspaper compartment, additional mail slots, and a package compartment. The specific layout depends on the depth of the post and the selected retrieval direction. For example, on 180-mm-deep posts, the newspaper compartment must be positioned above the mailbox compartment; on certain 400-mm models, it can also be located behind it. A rotating cover to protect against rain is available as an additional option.

A parcel compartment is also documented for 180- and 400-mm-deep posts. It is lined with stainless steel on the inside and operated from the front. Preparation for a suitable parcel locker lock is coordinated on a project-by-project basis; the specific scope of delivery for the lock should be specified when placing the order.

CASA offers several types of lettering options. House numbers, street names, or family names can be laser-cut into the metal surface and backed with stainless steel or milky white acrylic glass. Alternatively, stainless steel characters can be mounted on the surface. A house number backed with acrylic glass can also be illuminated from the inside with LEDs.

The CASA mailbox posts are designed so that the contents of the mail retrieval compartment remain dry under normal weather conditions. However, Gartenmetall expressly points out that moisture may enter the mail retrieval compartment during heavy rain combined with wind. The mail collection area itself is fully lined with stainless steel on the inside, regardless of the selected exterior finish.
