Grave elements for individual commemoration

Most cemetery ordinances allow corten steel and stainless steel as grave borders or grave markers. This is pleasing because the earthy tones of stylish rusty corten steel, also known as stainless steel, fit well in a cemetery setting.

Certainly, there is no off-the-shelf solution for gravestones. However, our offer already includes a whole range of grave borders, gravestones, memorial plaques, crosses made of metal as well as grave lights made of Corten steel, stainless steel or color-coated stainless steel. We have also designed larger memorial stelae e.g. for central memorial sites like our element CERA.

Depending on the type of grave (normal grave or urn grave) or the size of the grave (single or family grave), standing gravestones or lying plaques are suitable. As a rule, lying gravestones may be placed by the relatives themselves. Standing gravestones must, if necessary. anchored securely in the ground by a specialist company.

Things to know about gravesites

Cemeteries are public spaces where survivors privately “lease” graves for a set period of time. The use of a gravesite is regulated by the respective cemetery regulations. Before erecting a gravestone, therefore, a permit must always be submitted to the cemetery administration with details of the material and appearance of the desired gravestone and the intended inscription in the form of a construction drawing. We will be happy to provide you with these documents upon request.

Stricter rules apply to the erection of standing gravestones or grave crosses than to lying gravestones, because they could fall over and injure cemetery visitors. The stability of the standing gravestones is examined annually by a shaking test.

Inscription Plate MEMORIUM

Metal plate with individual grave inscription for placing on the ground on grave plate, urn grave or as a simple memorial plaque. Optionally with cutout für flower vase.

Inscription plate to screw on

Laser-cut inscription plate e.g. for gravestone, memorial cross, grave cross or urn grave. Delivery includes 4 weld;bolts from behind, for mounting in the tombstone. For public memorial plaques, material thicknesses up to 8 mm are possible. In this case, the smallest web width of the letters should be at least equal to the thickness of the material. Material: 3 mm.

Tip: We also offer a pre-rusted inscription plate without lasered writing. On it can be applied on site, for example, a brass inscription.

Frequently Asked Questions About PALA Grave Edging and Grave Elements

PALA WITH EDGE is made of 3 mm-thick metal. The top edge is 60 mm wide and then folded inward by 20 mm. This creates a clearly visible upper border. 

PALA SOLID, on the other hand, is made of 6 mm-thick material and does not feature this folded edge. Which version you choose is therefore primarily a matter of the desired edge design and material appearance.

PALA is available in Corten steel, stainless steel, and color-coated stainless steel. Corten steel develops its characteristic rust-colored surface and is delivered by Gartenmetall with the visible sides already pre-rusted. Stainless steel offers a different, significantly more neutral metallic look. With color-coated stainless steel, the grave border can be matched to an existing color scheme.

The standard dimensions are 1,000 × 1,000 mm and 1,800 × 1,000 mm. The height is 150 mm in both cases.

Since grave sites can vary in size depending on the cemetery and type of grave, custom dimensions are also available. Before placing an order, you should therefore verify the required external dimensions directly at the grave site or based on the specifications provided by the cemetery administration.

No. The specific cemetery regulations determine which materials, dimensions, and designs are permitted. The regulations vary significantly: Some cemeteries allow metal borders, while others restrict or prohibit them.

Therefore, the material and dimensions should be coordinated with the relevant cemetery administration before placing an order. For grave elements requiring approval, Gartenmetall can provide technical documentation upon request.

The two standard sizes cover typical smaller and longer grave shapes. For non-standard dimensions, PALA can be custom-made. This allows the grave border to be adapted even to graves whose dimensions do not correspond to the standard variants.

The actual permitted dimensions at the respective cemetery are crucial. Especially for urn graves, these should be definitively determined before production begins.

Corten steel changes its surface when exposed to the elements and develops its characteristic patina of “noble rust.” For PALA garden metal products, S355J2W+N weather-resistant structural steel is used. 

With Corten steel, rust may detach from the surface—particularly in the early stages—or be washed away by rainwater. When installing the product, you should therefore consider where this water will drain and whether adjacent light-colored surfaces could become discolored as a result.

The grave border is delivered as a prefabricated unit or a welded frame. Therefore, the actual frame structure does not need to be assembled on-site at the cemetery from individual metal sheets.

During installation, the specified height, a secure fit of the border, and the requirements of the respective cemetery must be observed. For additional upright grave markers, such as crosses, there are further requirements for secure fastening.

For grave site design, Gartenmetall offers, among other items, the MEMORIUM inscription plaque, memorial crosses, and the TOMBA grave lantern. The CRUX grave edging is also part of the product line and serves both as an edging and a divider for the planting area.

This allows the edging, inscription, and other grave elements to be coordinated in terms of materials.

Yes. Memorial plaques can be custom-made with names, dates, and designs. Custom sizes and project-specific grave markers are also available.

For a custom design, a drawing or hand-drawn sketch, along with the permitted dimensions, is helpful. This allows the design and manufacturing details to be finalized before the grave marker is produced.

Yes. In addition to individual grave borders and grave elements, Gartenmetall also develops complete urn grave complexes for municipalities and cemeteries. The dimensions, metal finish, and design can be tailored to the specific cemetery concept.
