Garden Railings –

Installation Without Welding

Fall protection and handrails are frequently needed in the garden. Planters on patios and balconies can also be fitted with railings to serve as a guardrail. For fall heights exceeding 1.0 m, DIN 18065 (Stairs and Railings) and the State Building Code (LBO) require that a safety railing be installed. This also applies to raised beds 90 cm or higher that serve as fall protection.

For many years, we have been supplying plug-in stainless steel railing elements with round posts—the BUNIA system—which can be installed easily and simply in private settings, usually without welding. The LAVAL system was developed for public areas and the associated higher requirements for stability and rigidity. Typical post finishes include Corten steel or stainless steel. In all cases, the handrail is finished with a polished stainless steel surface.

BUNIA Railing with Round Stainless Steel Posts

The BUNIA stainless steel railing is designed for use in private gardens. Both the handrail and the posts are constructed from Rotex-polished round tubing with a diameter of ø40 mm. This gives the railing a very elegant appearance. The standard height of the handrail is 90 cm.

BUNIA can be customized with various elements, such as crossbars or perforated metal and glass infills, to create a railing tailored to your needs, while also serving as a privacy screen, for example on balconies. When installed, for example, on TERRESTA planters, fall protection can be elegantly achieved.

The round posts are screwed into a stable surface. The distance between the posts should be approximately 1.0 m to a maximum of 1.2 m to ensure stability. A major advantage of this system is that all components are designed to be slotted together. This makes installation possible even for those without metalworking experience—and without welding.

LAVAL railing with flat posts

for private gardens and public spaces

The BUNIA railing system is suitable for both private gardens and public spaces and is custom-made. The stainless steel handrail has a diameter of ø40 mm/48 mm. Depending on the customer’s preferences, the posts are made from Corten steel, stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized steel. Dimensions of flat posts are determined by structural requirements. For example, in private settings such as balconies, the cross-section is 2x 50×6 mm; in public areas, the cross-section can be up to 2x 60×8 mm. Base plate with a surface area of at least 150×150 mm. When planning railings with crossbars for public areas, we recommend positioning the handrail slightly forward to make it more difficult for children to climb over. Railing height: at least 900 mm.

LAVAL Railing System: Snap-Together and Screw-On

Together with the ball joints, all elements of the LAVAL railing system are designed to be snapped together and screwed on. This means that, in most cases, installation is possible without welding.

Special Arch Bridge with Railing

Our ROMANA garden bridge is also made fall-proof using the LAVAL system. The handrail, made of round stainless steel, follows the curve of the Corten steel bridge arch, giving it a very elegant appearance. The posts are bolted to the bridge arch using end-mounted fasteners.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Stainless Steel Railings

BUNIA is designed for private gardens, while LAVAL is intended for custom-designed railings in private and, in particular, public spaces. BUNIA consists of round stainless steel posts and a round handrail with a diameter of 40 mm. The system is designed as a plug-in system and is intended for typical applications in single-family homes.

LAVAL uses flat posts, the dimensions of which are selected according to structural requirements. Materials available for the posts include stainless steel, Corten steel, and hot-dip galvanized steel. The handrail for LAVAL is also made of polished stainless steel.

Yes. BUNIA is designed as a plug-in system and can be installed without welding. In the LAVAL system, the components are also designed for plug-in and screw-in assembly; this allows for installation without welding in most situations.

Suitable ball joints for the stainless steel handrails are available for corners and changes in slope. Since every railing situation may have different dimensions and connection points, the specific design is tailored to the construction project.

Various infill options are available for BUNIA and LAVAL. Depending on the system and design, crossbars, infill panels, or perforated sheets, as well as pre-assembled glass infills are possible.

For BUNIA, for example, variants with four or five stainless steel crossbars as well as infill panels with patterns similar to the Gartenmetall VISTA system are available. Gartenmetall also offers pre-assembled options for glass infills; the glass is supplied by the customer. LAVAL can also be designed with crossbars, sheet metal, or glass infills.

The models offered by Gartenmetall without infill are explicitly designated as auxiliary handrails in the technical product information. This applies to both the corresponding BUNIA models and the LAVAL models without infill.

If actual fall protection is required, a suitable railing design must therefore be selected and adapted to the specific installation situation. Infill, dimensions, and structural design must not be chosen based solely on appearance.

In the BUNIA railing system, the round posts and handrail are made of polished stainless steel. In some versions, the infill panels can be made of stainless steel or Corten steel, for example.

In the LAVAL system, the handrail is also made of polished stainless steel. Depending on the version, the flat posts are available in Corten steel, stainless steel, or hot-dip galvanized steel. A color-coated version can be requested in accordance with the technical product information. A LAVAL system with Corten steel posts is therefore not a railing made entirely of Corten steel.

The BUNIA railing for private gardens has a standard railing height of 900 mm. According to the manufacturer, the spacing between the round posts is approximately 1.0 m and may not exceed approximately 1.2 m.

For LAVAL, the technical product information also specifies a railing height of 900 mm for the single-family home version. The version described there for public areas is 1,000 mm high. The maximum post spacing for LAVAL is 1.3 m; post cross-sections and other dimensions are determined according to structural requirements.

BUNIA and LAVAL can be screwed onto a stable or appropriately prepared surface. For installation situations where fastening from above is not possible or practical, Gartenmetall also offers elements for side-end fastening.

This mounting method is intended, for example, for connections to walls and balconies or on the sides of stair treads. Corners and changes in slope can be accommodated using ball joints in the handrail, allowing even more complex configurations to be implemented on-site without welding.

Yes. The railing systems are used for various outdoor areas, including garden stairs, patios, and balconies. Gartenmetall also showcases designs in which a BUNIA railing is mounted on a planter or plant trough.

With such a combination, the planter, mounting, required railing height, and structural conditions must all be considered together. Gartenmetall specifically mentions TERRESTA planters as a possible combination with a railing.

For higher stability and rigidity requirements in public areas, the LAVAL railing system with flat posts is recommended. The dimensions of the posts are selected based on structural requirements; for example, the technical product information specifies stronger flat posts and larger base plates for a public installation than for the version used in single-family homes.

LAVAL is individually designed and engineered for each specific project. A structural analysis can be prepared on a case-by-case basis as needed. This makes the system suitable for projects where the railing design cannot be determined exclusively using standard dimensions.

Stainless steel should also be cleaned regularly of deposits and dirt when used outdoors. For light soiling, Gartenmetall recommends, among other things, a dish soap solution or a suitable stainless steel care product; a special stainless steel cleaner is available for corrosion spots. Abrasive cleaning agents should be avoided, as they can scratch the surface.

For Corten steel parts, the surrounding environment must be taken into account above all. As the surface of the Corten steel forms and changes, rust particles may detach and discolor adjacent surfaces. Gartenmetall therefore recommends planning the installation so that this rust detachment can occur in a controlled manner.
