Straight benches for public spaces or private gardens

Our range of benches for street furniture is as diverse as the requirements in public spaces: with open or closed frames, straight or curved, with or without backrests or armrests, made from various materials such as Corten steel, stainless steel or colour-coated steel, with seat surfaces made of wood, natural fibres or a warm plastic coating, with lighting...

What all our metal benches have in common is that they are designed for durability in both materials and construction. Furthermore, they can be easily adapted to the individual requirements of clients – for example, in terms of length, width and features. This is possible because Gartenmetall® designs, engineers and manufactures all its garden benches and seating for urban spaces in-house.

With Gartenmetall®’s stylish and elegant metal benches, you can enhance the quality of the public environment in city centres, parks and squares, thereby bringing people together. Request your personalised quote: Contact

Straight benches for public spaces: various ranges

Our range of benches for public spaces comprises a wide variety of benches, which differ in terms of their base, design and seat cushioning.

Most benches are available in various types of metal and with different materials for the seat cushions. It is the combination of these two elements that gives the benches their distinctive appearance. We are also happy to craft bespoke benches to your specifications.

Benches – Technical Specifications and Options

Thanks to our many years of experience, we have virtually perfected the technical details of our benches. Seat cushions are bolted on from below, backrests are manufactured to match the bench’s design, and the integrated lighting shows everything in the best light.

Ground Fixing

Every bench should stand firmly and securely on the ground. There are several possible options: using brackets to bolt it down, or making the bench heavy enough that it is virtually impossible to move without tools. If the base is constructed as a solid metal structure, filling it with sand or moraine gravel is a good way of increasing its weight and thus its stability. When embedding it in the ground, pay attention to the seat height and, if necessary, specify a higher seat height when ordering!

Seat panels: Technical details

The seat panels are bolted from below using a stainless steel cross-bracing system, ensuring that no fixing bolts are visible from above or from the sides of the timber. The entire seating surface is bolted to the substructure between the seat panels. This ensures that the structure remains accessible at all times for maintenance purposes. The screws can also be fitted into the timber from below using the high-quality Gartenmetall LOCK-System®. This particularly robust method has been statically verified with its own approval (ETA 11/0212 dated 12 October 2016).

Materials for seat panels

The seat panels are an important design element and give the benches their very distinctive look. It is not only the choice of material – such as RESYSTA or hardwood – that plays a role, but also the dimensions of the seat panels and the arrangement of the slats. We have opted for various standard dimensions for the slats. However, you are welcome to let us know if you have any special requirements.

Thermally treated ash 25x120 mm
RESYSTA®140x20 mm
KEBONY® 22x120 mm
Hardwood 65x65 mm
Hardwood 130 x 65 mm
Steel, 65 x 220 mm, with a black plastic coating

Backrests for benches (optional)

Backrests transform the stool-style bench into a proper bench and provide the basis for relaxed seating. Height: approx. 350 mm, recline angle approx. 20°. The length of the backrests can be set freely, regardless of the length of the seat cushion. A touch of asymmetry often gives the seating element that special ‘something’. The maximum distance between two brackets depends on the material and cross-section. In most cases, it is < 1 metre. The brackets are included in the price per metre.

Integrated lighting (optional)

The benches can be attractively illuminated. There are two options: for benches with a solid base, the LED light strip can be fitted along the long side of the solid body. The distance from each corner is 250 mm. For benches with an open body, the light strip is also fitted beneath the seat cushion.

Four seat profile illustrations show various backrest materials: hardwood, KEBONY®, RESYSTA®. Each features different cross-sections and dimensions: 1x130x65 mm², 2x56x65 mm², 1x140x38 mm², 3x70x20 mm².

Dimensions of the bench

Our benches come in various standard sizes, which have proven their worth in practice. Most benches have a comfortable seat height of 475 mm and a seat depth of 490 mm. You can find more detailed information in our product information, where you will also find a checklist to help with planning. However, as we manufacture all our benches in-house, custom dimensions are no problem. Please ask our customer advisors: Contact

Bench length:
The bench length is determined by the length of the front edge. It may differ from the length of the seat cushions due to the design.

Seat height:
There is no official standard for the height of a bench. We recommend a seat height of 420 mm to 490 mm for public areas. As standard, our benches are designed with a seat height of 475 mm. This also makes it easier for older people to stand up. If the bench is to be fixed to the floor, the legs must be extended accordingly.

Seat depth:
The seat depth for benches with a backrest should be at least 400 mm. For stools, the depth can be increased to over 500 mm. In practice, 490 mm has proven to be a typical seat depth.

Round bench:
For a round bench, the inner and outer diameters are specified as dimensions; in some cases, the length of the front edge and the opening angle are also given. In addition, it is necessary to specify whether the front edge lies on the outside or inside of the radius.

Wooden benches with labels: On the left, a straight bench shows seat height, seat depth, bench length-front edge, additional height in the ground. On the right, there is a curved bench labelled with inner and outer diameter.

A seating and lounging island as a unique bench

Right in the middle of the school playground in Nürtingen, a seven-metre-long and three-metre-wide seating and lounging island invites visitors to relax. The base of the large platform is made of Corten steel, whilst the seat surface is made of RESYSTA®, a weather-resistant and durable natural fibre composite. The seat surface was fitted to the base as a single unit, ensuring that no screws are visible. This minimises the risk of injury and helps prevent vandalism.

Frequently asked questions about our straight benches

Gartenmetall’s straight benches are designed as street furniture for public and sophisticatedly designed outdoor spaces. A variety of substructures, seat cushions and fittings allow them to be adapted to squares, parks and similar outdoor areas. For public spaces, Gartenmetall particularly recommends securing the benches firmly to the ground to protect against unauthorised movement and vandalism.

The range of straight benches includes, amongst others, KEMPTEN, EMDEN, MINDEN, POTSDAM, BERLIN, LEIPZIG, MAINZ and DRESDEN. The models differ primarily in the design and construction of the base frame, as well as in the arrangement of the seat cushions. BERLIN, for example, features a visually solid, enclosed base frame with a seat cushion arranged lengthways, whilst on the LEIPZIG model the seat cushion is arranged crossways. KEMPTEN, on the other hand, features a minimalist metal side panel.
Depending on the series, the substructure is available in Corten steel, stainless steel, colour-coated stainless steel and hot-dip galvanised steel. For the seat surfaces, the system includes, amongst other options, 100% hardwood, RESYSTA®, KEBONY®, thermo-treated ash and metal with a black plastic coating. Which material combinations are available and technically suitable depends on the specific series and model.
For most straight Gartenmetall benches, the standard seat height is 475 mm and the typical seat depth is 490 mm. Gartenmetall generally recommends a seat height of between 420 and 490 mm for public areas. The length of the bench is defined by the front edge of the bench and, due to its design, may differ from the length of the actual seat cushions.

Yes. Gartenmetall manufactures the benches in-house and can therefore customise the length, width (or seat depth), seat height and other design details to suit each specific project. Many product ranges are manufactured to order anyway. When making an enquiry, you should therefore specify not only the desired product range but, in particular, the length of the front edge, the seat depth and the seat height.

Depending on the design, the benches can stand on their own weight or be bolted down using floor brackets. An extended design for integration beneath the floor covering is also provided. For public spaces, Gartenmetall generally recommends securing the benches by bolting them in place. If a bench is to be embedded in the ground or within the paving structure, the additional embedding depth must be taken into account when determining the seat height.
A backrest is available as an option on suitable models. Its length can be specified independently of the length of the seat cushion; this also makes it possible to have a backrest that extends only part of the way. Depending on the design, different materials can also be specified for the backrest.
On the Gartenmetall benches, the seat covers are secured from below, so that no fixing screws are visible from above. The entire seat can be removed for maintenance work. In addition, any accessible screws on the seat cushion can be fitted with stainless steel security screws, which can only be removed using a special tool.
Yes, integrated lighting is available as an option. For benches with a solid base, an LED light strip can be integrated into the long side of the metal frame. For open designs, the light strip can be positioned beneath the seat cushion. The exact position and length are determined on a project-by-project basis.

RESYSTA® is particularly appealing for its low maintenance requirements. According to Gartenmetall, this natural-fibre composite with a wood-effect finish is weather-resistant, does not turn grey, and does not splinter, swell or crack; nor does it require the maintenance and preservation measures typically needed for wood. KEBONY® is also low-maintenance and, apart from normal cleaning with a broom or brush and water, requires no further treatment; when exposed to the elements, the wood develops a silver-grey patina. However, the type of seat cushion that can be used must be checked for the selected bench series.
