ROMANA Garden Bridge with a Curved Design

Unique Design with a Variety of Options

Not every garden needs a garden bridge. But where a garden bridge is installed, it often becomes the visual focal point of the path. Our ROMANA garden bridge can serve as just such a highlight in your garden. The curved shape is necessary for structural reasons. The bridges are self-supporting and can be placed directly on the two foundations prepared on-site.

Here, too, many options are available. For example, you can freely choose the base material, the decking, or the number of panels in the railing.

Garden bridges add structure to the garden

Both practical and elegant

Metal garden bridges are versatile. Combining water features with bridges creates a special effect. Standing right above the water is exciting and fascinating—not just for children. Here in the picture, you can see a particularly beautiful example of garden design: The artificial water feature with the overflowing AQUA LINEA water basins becomes even more “immersive” with the bridge. The combination of a water feature and a garden bridge is particularly elegant and somehow natural. With the garden bridge, the designer can bring entirely new ideas and structures to life in the garden.

Planning and Installing Garden Bridges Made Easy

Custom manufacturing with a wide range of options supports the garden designer

The bridges in the PONTE series are essentially based on a modular system: Many variants can be combined. Railings, decking, or surface materials. Even though they’re based on catalog designs, each bridge is unique. Spans up to six meters are delivered in a single piece. With an on-site assembly crane, installation is a breeze: Place it on the prepared foundation, bolt it down—and you’re done!

Frequently Asked Questions About the PONTE Garden Bridge

The ROMANA garden bridge can span ponds, waterways, depressions, or flower beds, connecting different areas or levels within an outdoor space. Gartenmetall designs the PONTE series for use in both private gardens and public parks. This means that ROMANA is not merely a decorative bridge or exclusively a pond bridge, but rather a walkable component of the path layout.
ROMANA is available in standard widths of 1,000 and 1,500 mm, as well as in lengths of 3,000, 4,500, and 6,000 mm. Custom dimensions are also available. The weight and exact dimensions of each model are specified in the approval designation. According to the manufacturer, bridges with lengths up to 6 m are delivered in a single piece.
For the basic structure of the ROMANA garden bridge, you can choose between Corten steel, stainless steel, and a color-coated version. For the Corten steel version, Gartenmetall uses weather-resistant structural steel S355J2W+N with material number 1.8965; the visible surfaces are delivered with a pre-rusted finish. For the powder-coated version, the base material is stainless steel 1.4301 V2A. The visible surfaces are painted as standard in RAL 7016 Anthracite Gray, fine-textured matte; custom colors are available for an additional charge.

By default, ROMANA features crosswise-laid decking made of 100% hardwood with a cross-section of 65 × 65 mm. Alternatively, RESYSTA® is available in a 20 × 70 mm format. The RESYSTA® decking can be installed lengthwise in a curved pattern or crosswise in a straight pattern; an additional substructure is required for this variant.

Hardwood is a natural product and, when used outdoors, changes color and surface over time. RESYSTA®, on the other hand, is a wood-look natural fiber composite material that, according to the manufacturer, does not gray, splinter, swell, or crack.

The ROMANA garden bridge features the LAVAL railing system, which includes a curved, polished stainless steel handrail with a diameter of 48 mm. The basic design does not include railing infill. Optionally, six curved stainless steel crossbars with a diameter of 12 or 15 mm can be installed on both sides. Another option is sheet metal infill similar to the MIAMI fence system; custom designs are also available for this.
The curved shape of the ROMANA garden bridge is not merely a design element. Gartenmetall states that this shape is necessary for structural reasons. A straight PONTE version is not listed as a standard option in the official product information.
ROMANA is self-supporting and is mounted on two stable foundations prepared on site. The basic structure is designed at both ends of the bridge for attachment to these foundations. Standard foundation dimensions are not specified for PONTE, as the dimensions and weight depend on the specific bridge design selected.
The ROMANA garden bridge is delivered fully assembled and ready for installation. Lifting eyes are provided for transport and installation. On site, the bridge is placed onto the prepared foundations using a suitable assembly crane and secured in place. This eliminates the need to assemble the base structure, walking surface, and railing on site to form a complete bridge.
In addition to private gardens, Gartenmetall explicitly lists public parks as an area of application for PONTE garden bridges. For a specific publicly accessible project, however, the project-specific requirements must be compared with the intended design. The published PONTE product information does not specify a universally applicable load class or blanket approval for all public installation situations.
With Corten steel, rust can flake off the surface, especially in the first few years. The installation site should therefore be planned so that rust-containing runoff water is drained in a controlled manner and adjacent flooring or building components are not unnecessarily discolored. When Corten steel is combined with hardwood, dark discoloration caused by the materials themselves may also occur due to iron oxide and the tannic acid contained in the wood.
