Street furniture shapes and enriches public spaces

Gartenmetall® not only manufactures metal products for the garden, but has also offered a wide range of street furniture for squares, parks, school playgrounds and pedestrian zones for more than ten years. The street furniture, such as benches, planters, cycle racks, information pillars and litter bins, is specifically designed for public spaces. They are characterised by high-quality, vandal-proof workmanship, robust base materials and a high degree of structural stability. Should the tree planters or planters need to be moved – for example, when a town festival is due to take place – they can be quickly cleared away thanks to crane lugs or forklift openings.

The Gartenmetall® street furniture range

Are you looking for high-quality, durable and modern street furniture for squares, parks, schools, town halls or other public spaces? Then you should take a look at our extensive range of street furniture. Be inspired!

Please take a seat – straight and curved benches

Our range of benches for street furniture is as diverse as the requirements of public spaces: with open or closed frames,& nbsp;straight or round, with a backrest, armrests or without any at all, made from Corten steel, stainless steel or colour-coated, with a wooden seat or a plastic-coated seat… As all our benches are designed and manufactured in-house, we can tailor them specifically to the needs of local authorities – and enable developers to offer the public a more pleasant environment with stylish seating.

Sturdy yet flexible – Mobile tree planters

Simple and elegant, the mobile planters from Gartenmetall® into town squares, school playgrounds or pedestrian zones. The square or round tree planters are designed with a sturdy substructure and are fitted with crane hooks or forklift openings for mobile use. For permanent installations, the base can be omitted, making the construction simpler and more cost-effective. Water-retention mats and an integrated water reservoir, both available as optional extras, ensure good irrigation for urban trees.

A harmonious ensemble – planters with a bench

The combination of plant trough with bench offers very special possibilities for outdoor space design, as the two elements together create a harmonious overall look. The troughs can be elegantly tailored in shape, size and features to the requirements of the public space, whilst the bench area is also customised to the wishes of architects and local authorities. Suitable materials include rust-red Corten steel, high-quality stainless steel or, for a special splash of colour, colour-coated stainless steel. Here too, crane lugs or forklift openings ensure flexibility. Further options such as seat cushions, backrests or lighting can be easily produced thanks to in-house manufacturing.

Everything you need to know at a glance – information pillars and display cases

Even at first glance, our display cases, information pillars, signposts and information signs, reveal that they incorporate technical sophistication and high-quality design. Our wide range of information pillars includes simple models for signposting footpaths and public spaces, right through to complex display cases for town halls, churches and other public institutions. All information panels are vandal-proof and designed to prevent injury, and are manufactured to ensure stable installation.

Secure parking for bicycles – bicycle racks and bike stands

In town centres, outside schools, universities and sports facilities, bicycle racks are an essential part of street furniture. The two bicycle racks  FREIBURG and OLDENBURG combine functionality with an attractive, clean-lined design and are therefore often arranged in a row. FREIBURG is a sturdy frame with rounded edges for leaning and locking the bike against. OLDENBURG also features a wooden leaning board to prevent the bike from getting scratched.

For a clean city – litter bins and ashtrays

The high-quality rubbish bins DANZIG and sturdy freestanding ashtrays POSEN are specifically designed as street furniture for public spaces and intended for use outside restaurants, sports grounds, schools or in public squares. They are securely anchored to the ground or bolted to the wall. The large capacity of the litter bins and ashtrays allows for long intervals between emptying.

Frequently asked questions about street furniture for public spaces

Street furniture refers to elements of urban design that make public outdoor spaces usable and give them structure. These include, for example, benches, seating islands, tree planters, planters, cycle racks, information pillars, and litter bins and ashtrays.

Which elements are appropriate depends on the usage concept. In a heavily frequented square, seating and mobile planters may be the main focus, whilst in front of schools or public buildings, additional cycle racks, information systems or litter bins may be required.

When it comes to publicly accessible areas, several factors should be considered together right from the planning stage: wear and tear caused by high footfall, the site conditions and fixing requirements, weather conditions, cleaning requirements, potential damage, and the question of whether individual elements may need to be relocated or modified at a later date.

Gartenmetall therefore designs street furniture with sturdy metal structures and finishes tailored to public use. When selecting specific products, the location, desired service life and maintenance plan should also be taken into account.

Depending on the product and its intended use, Gartenmetall’s street furniture may be made from materials including Corten steel, stainless steel, colour-coated finishes and hot-dip galvanised steel.

Corten steel is used primarily because of the rust patina that develops as it weathers. Stainless steel offers high corrosion resistance and a technically clean surface. Colour-coated metal surfaces allow specific RAL or DB colour shades to be incorporated into a design concept. Hot-dip galvanised steel offers lasting corrosion protection, but deliberately has a rather technical surface character.

The choice of material should therefore not be based solely on the desired colour. Location, usage, maintenance and design requirements also play a role.

Depending on the bench model, Gartenmetall offers a range of materials. These include, amongst others, hardwood, KEBONY®, RESYSTA®, thermally treated ash and plastic-coated metal. This decision affects more than just the appearance. Other relevant factors include weather resistance, maintenance requirements, design possibilities and the desired feel. Not every seat material can be combined with every bench shape. For round benches or those with unusual shapes, the choice of material should therefore be considered in conjunction with the design.
Yes. Gartenmetall designs and manufactures its own products and can therefore tailor dimensions, shapes and design details to suit specific projects. In addition to variants from the existing range, bespoke products can also be produced to design specifications or drawings.& nbsp;
This is relevant, for example, when a bench needs to be tailored to a specific layout, planters need to be integrated into an existing outdoor space design, or standard dimensions conflict with traffic and circulation areas.

The choice should be based on the intended use. Benches and seating islands create defined seating areas. Tree planters and plant troughs allow for greenery even in locations where traditional planting in the ground is not possible, or only possible with considerable effort. Bicycle racks organise parking spaces, information pillars provide wayfinding and information, whilst litter bins support the management of heavily frequented areas.

For larger projects, it makes sense not to consider these elements in isolation. Materials, design language, fixings and finishes can be coordinated so that several pieces of street furniture come together to form a cohesive whole.

This is possible with Gartenmetall models designed for this purpose. Mobile tree planters and various plant troughs can be fitted with crane lugs or forklift openings.

This can be useful for spaces whose use changes over the course of the year. If, for example, areas need to be kept clear for markets, events or other temporary uses, elements designed accordingly can be put in place. However, mobility should be taken into account right from the outset when determining dimensions, selecting plants and specifying technical equipment.

When it comes to tree planters, it is not enough simply to specify the dimensions and surface finish. Factors such as the available substrate volume, water supply, drainage and maintenance are all relevant to the tree’s development.

Gartenmetall offers a range of technical designs for tree planters, including water-permeable bases as well as variants with a water reservoir, a false bottom and an irrigation pipe. Which features are appropriate depends on the tree, the location and the watering plan.

Technical product information and tender documents are available for various garden metal products and materials. This applies, for example, to benches, planter troughs with benches and base materials.

In the case of project-specific modifications or bespoke designs, it is advisable to carry out technical consultation before the tender process is finalised. This ensures that materials, dimensions, fixings and fittings can be clearly specified before the contract is awarded.

Gartenmetall offers bespoke products as a separate section within its product range. This enables solutions to be implemented when a standard product does not fit the specified geometry or design plans.

The earlier the technical consultation takes place, the better the design can be integrated with structural requirements, material selection and manufacturing. Particularly in the case of larger seating areas, planting islands or project-specific metal structures, this prevents design details from having to be resolved technically only during the construction phase.
