Simple and elegant tree planters

A good place for trees and shrubs

Our large and robust tree planters and plant troughs are designed for use in public spaces. They are ideal for installation in town squares and public green spaces. The planters are designed with a sturdy substructure, crane hooks or forklift openings for mobile use. For fixed installations without a base, the construction is simpler and more cost-effective. To ensure good, stable plant growth, we recommend the use of water-retention mats and, optionally, the installation of a false floor with an integrated water reservoir. Despite the pre-designed example configurations, each planter is tailored to the surroundings and the individual requirements of the planners and users. A wide range of options is available, as the design and manufacture are carried out directly by us as the manufacturer.

GENF mobile tree planters

With a square base, available with or without a flange

The GENF range features our tree planters and large planters for public spaces with a square base – available either as a rectangular cube or with a tapered design. The tree planters are available with a raised rim all round for high stability and reduced risk of injury, or with a solid, straight upper edge. The tree planters are fitted with a water-permeable base as standard.

Lugs in the corners facilitate easy crane transport and can be used to secure the trees and shrubs. Special insulating panels made of extruded polystyrene rigid foam (XPS) are fitted to protect the root zone. If the containers need to be moved frequently, additional forklift openings can be fitted, which are concealed by a decorative cover.

We offer the tree pots with the following metal finishes  Corten steel,  stainless steel or  colour-coated stainless steel are available.

Trees in mobile planters can lower surface temperatures

A recent study by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) at the Messeplatz in Basel shows that urban trees in mobile planters can significantly lower surface temperatures. Surface temperatures in the shade of these mobile tree planters were measured to be more than 15 degrees lower than those of the adjacent asphalt. The study thus demonstrates the potential of greening measures to locally reduce high surface temperatures.

BERN portable tree planter

Planter with a round base

BERN is our tree planter with a round base. It is available in a cylindrical or conical design, each with either a bevelled rim or a solid top edge. You can decide for yourself which look you prefer. All versions are designed for use in public spaces and can be repositioned as required thanks to the lifting hooks inside the planters.

Larger shrubs or trees can also be securely anchored to the hooks. All planters come as standard with a water-permeable base and root barrier panels. If mobility is required, we recommend incorporating forklift access points. This allows even filled planters to be moved easily. Matching privacy screens are available to conceal the sides.

Base construction of the mobile tree planters

Our mobile tree planters and planting troughs are constructed as standard with a water-permeable base on a robust base structure (Type 1). However, for specific requirements, we offer further base variants, e.g. with a water reservoir for longer watering intervals (Base Types 2 and 3).

Wooden container with insulation (20 mm) for temperature stability, watertight base, water reservoir, overflow pipe (ø40 mm), forklift opening, water storage mats (optional), and irrigation pipe with level indicator.

Accessories for mobile tree planters

We offer a range of add-ons to meet specific requirements or demands for street furniture.

  • Forklift openings for easy transport, as well as cover plates for the forklift openings
  • Tree grilles: Laser-cut cover plates to be bolted onto the upper reinforcement struts. Available in 2-piece or 4-piece sets, depending on the dimensions of the tree planter.
  • Lighting
Four square covers, each with round central openings, display different patterns: circles, rings, sunrays, and grids. Labels: Design CIRCLES (01), RING (02), SUN (03), GRID (04).

Frequently asked questions about mobile tree planters

When planning tree planters, specific questions often arise regarding design, materials, irrigation, mobility and custom dimensions. The following answers provide a concise overview of the GENF and BERN ranges and help to narrow down the most suitable technical design for each project.

The GENF and BERN tree planters are designed for trees and larger woody plants in public spaces. They are particularly suitable for squares, pedestrian zones, public green spaces and other paved outdoor areas where flexible positioning of the plants is required. Thanks to their mobile design, the location of the trees can be changed at a later date. For permanent installations, a simpler version without a base is also available.

The main difference between the GENF and BERN tree planters lies in their shape: GENF is designed for angular or conical shapes, whilst BERN is designed for round shapes. Both ranges are designed as robust tree planters for public spaces and, depending on the version, can be manufactured with a surrounding rim or a solid top edge. Technical options such as forklift openings and various irrigation configurations are also available. Which series is more suitable therefore depends primarily on the desired shape and how it is to be integrated into the outdoor space.

The GENF and BERN tree planters are available in Corten steel, stainless steel, hot-dip galvanised steel and colour-coated stainless steel. The colour-coated version is available in RAL colours. The choice of material can therefore be tailored to both the design specifications and the material concept of the respective outdoor space project.
Gartenmetall distinguishes between four technical designs. Type 1 is the basic version with a water-permeable base. Type 2 has a watertight base with a water reservoir and overflow; an irrigation pipe with a water level indicator can be added. Type 3 extends the design to include an intermediate base, water-retention mats, as well as an irrigation pipe and a water level indicator. Type 4 is a special version with a fillable water tank, which Gartenmetall intends to use as a mobile bollard barrier for the temporary protection of events.
In the case of Type 3, there is an integrated water reservoir in the lower section of the tree planter. Above this is an intermediate shelf; 40 mm-thick water-retention mats facilitate the transport of water to the root zone via capillary action whilst also contributing to its aeration. A watering pipe with a mechanical water level indicator is included as standard with Type 3. The manufacturer describes Type 3 as the preferred option for public installation.
GENF and BERN are fitted with lifting lugs for crane transport. If the planters are moved frequently, additional forklift openings can be provided. Removable privacy screens are available for these openings. For permanent installations, however, the planter can also be constructed without a base; according to Gartenmetall, this design is simpler and more cost-effective.
Yes. GENF and BERN are made to order, meaning that the dimensions can be specified on a project-by-project basis according to a reference sketch. The technical product information also sets out various configurable options. Gartenmetall does not specify a standard sheet metal thickness for this product range; the material thickness is determined according to the structural requirements of the respective tree planter.

The standard fittings include brackets that can be used for crane transport or for securing the tree. Additional fixing straps at the base for the root ball are also available. Furthermore, the tree planters are fitted with 20 mm thick root insulation panels, which are designed to protect the root zone from extreme temperature fluctuations.

Yes. On the product page, Gartenmetall provides both technical product information for the mobile tree planters and tender documents. The technical documentation includes, amongst other things, details on product ranges, materials, base structures, transport options, root insulation and possible dimensions, and is therefore suitable as a basis for further project and tender planning.
